{"id":2047,"date":"2023-10-04T14:19:19","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T21:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asccreative.com\/?p=2047"},"modified":"2024-01-04T14:20:19","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T22:20:19","slug":"changes-to-web-accessibility-legislation-in-2023-that-will-affect-small-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asccreative.net\/dev2\/changes-to-web-accessibility-legislation-in-2023-that-will-affect-small-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Changes to web accessibility legislation in 2023 that will affect small businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>If you own or manage a website in certain US states and Canadian provinces, you need to be aware of existing and pending civil rights and disability rights legislation affecting you.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2017 and updated in 2022, the US states legislation is following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-issues-web-accessibility-guidance-under-americans-disabilities-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guidance from the Dept of Justice<\/a> requiring websites to provide unique features and functionality for physically, visually and audibly challenged website visitors.\u00a0 In very real terms, this functionality allows users to use a website when the user experiences color blindness, full blindness, physical deformities, hearing loss, and other ailments.<\/p>\n<p>Web accessibility encompasses all disabilities that affect access to the Web, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>auditory<\/li>\n<li>cognitive<\/li>\n<li>neurological<\/li>\n<li>physical<\/li>\n<li>speech<\/li>\n<li>visual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain states are enforcing companies update their website through stiff fines.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, the Province of Ontario is leading with the Access for Ontarions with Disabilities Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoda.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AODA<\/a>). If your website takes revenue from any person in Ontario, you are subject to its rules.<\/p>\n<p>The changes required to your website are defined under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/fundamentals\/accessibility-intro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">W3C Web Accessibility Initiative<\/a> which describes a series of additional tools and technologies for your website so that people with disabilities can use it.
